Re your post, please excuse me if I don't understand the subject well enough

I accept that someone with the right number could steal an identity. But surely this requires that they have access to the IT, e.g. behind the scanners, in the bank, etc?

At a gate they have to present their finger or eye to the security people, not a number.

And it is easier for a gadget to be lost or stolen, than a body part - ref your wife's Etrade device
