- Connectivity, not convergence.
-
The simple model: a computer can be hooked to an expensive stereo system by means of a wire.
I wouldn't want a $400 computer integrated into a $1,000 stereo system. Just connect the two of them so that each can make use of the best features of the other.
Quoting:
The Christmas of the Future will feature consumers seeking devices that easily interoperate with each as convergence becomes critical.
[Note the leap from interoperate to convergence.]
Consumers already are telling the market they want multi-function devices (a recent IBM survey showing that two-thirds of buyers are seeking such features).
[And how disparate are the functions of those "multi-function devices"?]
With convergence comes the need for improved service because the level of product sophistication is sure to increase.
I like that last comment. When a product does a lot of barely related functions and using the product is very intricate, the companies responsible for manufacture and sales will receive a lot of calls asking, "How the He!! do I make this thing work?!!"
Eventually the customer learns not to buy such products, and the world goes on. - Posted by: Anton Philidor Posted on: 12/13/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
