World's next fuel source could be designer organisms

Dr. Jekyll...beware!

This is mad science. At least, I think we need to be really careful about the things we try, and the things we build. Something about these types of applications of science makes me more than a little nervous. There's too much potential for unintended side effects or runaway organisms. The Blob could be very real one of these days. I'm not joking or being alarmist here - we need to really think about whether we should even be trying some of these things. And by the way, what pending energy crisis? We may be OPEC-dependent for oil at the moment, but we could change that if we really desired. With nuclear, solar, wind & hydro power, plus ethanol from corn, there's really no validity to the term "pending energy crisis". Someone needs to make the situation sound more desperate than it is in order to get funding for his research, it seems.
