Interesting that the article left out the obvious use of these 'caterpillars' as a weapon.

"Conceivably, these robots...could be used by doctors to repair damaged tissue." ...or could be dropped by the millions over enemy lines and programmed to burrow into people's skin and inflict damage from the inside.

And why is Homeland Security funding robot research anyway? How do microscopic caterpillars help keep bombs off of planes and out of subways?
