Maybe with a bit more development. The article says the gel can withstand temps up to 600 degrees C. According to http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Evolution_of_Technology/TPS/Tech41.htm the low-temp areas of the shuttle (white tiles) experience temps up to 650 degrees C, while the high-temp areas feel up to 1260 degrees C.
