What about the little guys?
I see your point but there is another dimension to the discussion. There are many big companies *cough*MSFT*cough* that would take someone else's ideas and make them their own in a heartbeat. What if that was your idea? Wouldn't you want some way to get back some of the money and recognition from them?

The concept behind patents is reasonable. What's gotten out of hand is patenting things like breathing and clicking on a web page. Patents that shouldn't pass the laugh test are ending up in court and THAT is what needs to change. And there needs to be some type of special first level review for patent disputes that doesn't involve expensive litigation. Something that says yes, it looks like this is a valid patent and you infringe on it or no you don't or this patent is stupid we're throwing it out.

Right now it's a legal extortion racket. You pays me money or Guido here takes youz to court.
