The commander of that ship wouldn't let his data systems be networked with any other system. I always think of that when discussions like this come up.

To me the best systems are simple, hardened and closed. And I'd pay a lot to keep my system administration in house before I'd farm it out. When everything is working smoothly outsourcing is great. But when things to crap then you're glad you roll your own.

That mind set extends to other areas as well. In a sense we all outsource every day. We outsource our electricity production, water, gas and sewage processing. Most of us anyway. We do at our house as well, but we have backups for all those systems.

Like I said, outsourcing is fantastic when everything is hinky dinky but when the poopy hits the fan you'd better have the capacity to function in house.
