Many places it might fit, even for a small company.
I don't know that full application hosting makes sense, but a powerful engine behind existing apps does. A good example might be video processing. Instead of taking all night to format and compress a file on a PC it gets handed off to a machine with lots of compression engines using all the popular codecs. Would I pay a couple bucks to have that done in an hour? You bet. You want to render thousands of wire frame images to 3D? What a great way to do it.

Perhaps we will see small start ups design applications we will run on our PC's and the heavy lifting gets sent to the data processing service. That is cerainly a workable modle and there are a lot more. But I think it will be specialised areas that get the ball rolling.
