The amoeba strategy.
An amoeba engulfs and absorbs its prey, eventually breaking though the protective shell and digesting it.

Some businesses are using Linux, particularly for servers. No, no, it's actually happening; trust me.

Microsoft absorbs these foreign bodies by managing them.

They surround Linux outposts by introducing many of their own products.
Microsoft is glad that IT buyers are beginning to get interested in improving efficiency rather than just cutting costs. What could improve efficiency more than a set of products from a single vendor made to work together?

Then, to digest the Linux anomalies, they have to find a way to replace them.
Microsoft has found ways to show that they're cheaper to maintain than Linux, but they have to get past the difference in initial costs.
So, they introduce product that does what Linux does, and make it free or very cheap in the context of major purchases of their integrated products.

Linux, the oddball component of the IT operation disappears.

All denigrating descriptions of Linux are happy, of course.
