"Second, your original argument was that the only criterion for choosing a particular product should be its functionality"

Actually I meant that software should be chosen based on how good it is. Meaning how well it performs its functions and how well it fits with your own personal methodology in comparison with its competitors. Functionality alone is not enough if the program in question just happens to rub you up the wrong way when you use it. In my case Firefox rubs me up the wrong way. I'm sure its a fine browser, I just don't like it, and that dislike has nothing to do with its name or who made it.

Software should be chosen or rejected based on how well it performs its selected function in keeping with how YOU work, not on the company name behind it.

Of course I acknowledge that MS have been convicted of antitrust violations, and you might choose to boycott them based on this, however, antitrust or not, company stagnation or not, these things do not detract from the fact that a piece of MS software might be better suited to its job than the software produced by its competitors.

Simply by your comment that you do use MS office, the inference is that you are not *that* worried by the antitrust violations, or you would be using something else.
