This was an ACT conference. While you are right about the influence of large firms, both the Congress and the USPTO keep the individual inventor high on the priority list.

It's part of our tradition that the lone inventor in the basement has been the backbone of our innovation-based economy. Whether this is still the case may be doubtful - certainly in some fields - but organizations like ACT are still potent, as evidenced by the speakers they were able to attract.
