Until...

They sue the other 43 companies for patent infringement, win, and you and I get to pay extra cash for everything that uses jpg compression (Cameras, software, storage devices, etc). The idea that this money ONLY comes from the pockets of "rich corporations" is a vast understatement. It comes from you and me, the consumers. If you think that we should all just go to some other compression format, think again. This is not the first article about this compression infringement. From what I understand, their patent is so broad and so low level that it could apply to a lot more than just jpg (even mp2, and mpeg). I even heard that the original idea was first published in the 1920's by some mathematician. So, I hope they get their patent handed to them in a smelly sock. I don't think this nonsense serves anyone except some patent lawyers.
