I could be wrong, but ...
I think initially it's 7 years, plus by filing an extension it can be extended for up to a total of 26. In any case you are right - even 7 years is millenia in computer terms. Most manufacturers now have new technologies yearly, and sometimes even twice per year. So we are talking anywhere from 7 to 52 generations of technology. Might as well have been invented in the ice age.
