You're correct to a point. You own the copyright to the *image* not the software that captured it. Just as in film, you don't own any copyrights or patents to the raw film, developers, papers, or ancillary equipment used to make the image, you have no such rights in digital format. You *own* a camera, film or digital, but have no claims to the mechanics of how it makes or stores an image.
