"sperm can last up to five days in the cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes. It takes sperm a couple of days to make the trip to the fallopian tubes to meet the egg"

Emergency contraception works by 3 different methods:
http://www.4woman.gov/faq/econtracep.htm
Emergency contraception keeps a woman from getting pregnant by stopping:

*ovulation, or stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs that can be fertilized;
*fertilization, or stopping the egg from being fertilized by the sperm;
*implantation, or stopping a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the wall of the uterus.

So it's going to depend on the individual situation involved, if the woman hasn't ovulated, it'll stop her from doing so, if she has but the sperm hasn't reached the egg, it will prevent fertilization, and if fertilization has occured, it will prevent implantation.

One could argue that if the third option takes place, you're not directly killing anything, just preventing it from finding a suitable environment, and the body deals with it from there (as happens naturally all the time). This is, of course, a bit of a nitpick, as you point out, but since this is only one scenario for what could be happening, there is some supposition involved.

---In my view, the ONLY starting point for either is insemination.---

Always an interesting question. Since you can get a split in the embryo and end up with twins (through natural or artificial means) pretty much any time after fertilization until gastrulation occurs, what does this mean? If life begins at fertilization, and the soul enters the body then, do twins only have 1/2 a soul?
