Yes, they are idiots
Sorry, at the same time they're interested in using these technologies to profit, they're fighting tooth and nail to have these same technologies made illegal. Why? Because they're idiots, and within their own companies, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Sony has officially announced positions on both sides of the MGM vs. Grokster court case. AOL/Time Warner is part of the group that announced the RIAA's guidelines for ISP's and is one of the ISP's fighting against those same guidelines and refusing to implement them.

If they do ever find a way to profit from the internet, it will be because they were dragged, kicking and screaming, into profit. Just like they were in the case of the VCR.
