I think that really depends on where you live ...
Some states tax at higher rates than others. So count yourself fortunate. But there are other reasons that people are burned up over taxation.

As you yourself have alluded to, the prices of necessities (housing, energy, healthcare and food) have risen relentlessly in the past few years. The only reason there has been no inflation is that the prices of the toys have plunged. When you have little left over after paying for necessities, any amount of taxation hurts. And when a lot of that tax money seems to get wasted, it hurts doubly much.

So what about the wealthy? Why do they complain about taxes? Well, if the truth would be known, there are plenty of wealthy people who would GLADLY pay more taxes IF that money was spent efficiently. But private sector people get really upset when they see public sector people working less and making more than people in the private sector. They see these kinds of things and they conclude that THEIR money is being mismanaged. They also get miffed when they see money being spent on projects that would NEVER get approved in a public vote, but that are supported by some special interest group and shoved through. I personally think that all public expenditures should have to be reviewed by a panel of reputable businessmen pre-screened for any conflict of interest. Government employees, though they be fine people in every way, are often terrible when it comes to managing business. The private sector employee needs to make money for the company or he/she won't have a job. The public sector employee on the other hand faces a continued stream of tax money, regardless of the quality of his/her decisions. I suspect if those expenditures where reviewed preemptively by a qualified panel of independent businessmen, a lot of public projects would be completed at a fraction of their current costs.
