The balance is difficult.
Do a law that does a good job protecting the creative, and the products devised by the creative person will be bought by the big companies.

You've seen it in music.

You've seen it in pharma, where small company drugs are bought for distribution by big companies. The PR power, again.

Change copyright and/or patents and you're attacking the way the creative person gets paid, and not the chance for profits by big companies.

Eventually, pharmaceuticals will be treated like an essential public utility, with State or Federal review for pricing fairness. But we have a surprisingly long way to go until then.
Surprising because of all the misery drug costs inflict without response from the people in government who are so eager to protect people from other hazards, real and artificial.
