I agree there's a role for the RIAA, it's just a reduced role. As you point out, their strength is in promotion. So why rely on them for manufacturing and distribution, if you can do it for yourself much cheaper? Pay them like you'd pay any public relations firm, maybe offer 10% of your profits. Certainly, this is a better deal for an artist than the current 95%+ the RIAA is taking now.

True, but there will be real competition instead of a cartel, and many new firms will pop up to cover specific areas of the business, recording, manufacturing, etc., so the rates the RIAA will be able to command will be a lot lower than they're used to.

Good point on the back catalogue though. With the current length of copyright, the fatcats should be able to keep their coke habits well fueled from that alone. Then again, if they stick with their current pricing levels, and are competing against artist-owned recordings that cost 1/3 as much, they may have to cut back on the hookers.
