You're right about one thing.
Yes, some things I have prevented someone else from having them.

Awhile ago I won an essential competitive scholarship. I was proud of winning, but I also knew that people whose scores were not much less than mine could also have made good use of the award. It did concern me. Not enough to refuse, of course, but definitely enough to take the situation seriously.

So you have never done something whereby someone else lost out? You do realize you are taking up a spot at your company. Well, that's a job that SOMEONE ELSE could have had..but you "DAMAGED THEIR INCOME" my friend! wink Bwahahahaha!!! You're profiting, and their getting squat!

On open source programs that the programmer(s) know will reduce the value of a very similar program, we'll hold the issue until we see incontrovertible examples, okay?!

By the way, Linux is not such a program. It's cheap software written in collaboration by large companies whose primary gains come from ancillary sales of products and services, including more capable replacement software.
The days when volunteers, even true open source advocates, were the main force behind Linux are long past.
