how old am I?
When I started using computers, I was 8. I built my own with a soldering iron. 8 bit Micros had only just come out. And editors cost about $800 but you also needed a terminal (Like and ADM-3A) that cost at least $1000.
Some things stay the same though, this iMac 500DV that I picked up for $200 looks very similar to the ADM-3A. (apart from sexy OSX colour graphics screen).
So like I say, once it was very expensive to get an editor. I was lucky to have a hexadecimal keypad and screen. In fact this was cheaper than 16 LEDs and switches which is what a lot of people used to interact with their micros.
Technology and markets change.
Once it was the hardest thing in the world to design a cpu, now it's really really easy.
So that skill is probably not worth as much as it was.
