That indelicate issue resolved, there are grounds for discussion of whether it's a good idea to start a free project whose stated intent is to replace proprietary software made by an independent software developer. (We'll stay away from Microsoft's baggage.)

Let's say you're an independent software developer who has created a specialized piece of software after years of work that is very useful in a specific industry. You're selling it for $100 per copy, a price cheap enough that it's cost effective for companies in the industry to buy your software rather than pay to develop it yourself.

You hear about someone beginning an open source project whose purpose is to duplicate your software's functionality, and make it available free.

How do you feel about that project? Pleased and flattered that what you had discovered was so important and useful that someone else thought it worthwhile to steal its value?
