My suggestions
My 2 cents:

1. Wide choice, who will bother visiting the store if it only has the same 10 blockbusters you can get everywhere else?

2. Format, do Sony think everyone will change their equipment to suit an online store (*cough* mp3)? I don't. MPEG4 or DIVX because thats what users have on their DVD players.

3. Ease of use, I can switch on the TV or I can play a game, or rent a video. Anything that takes more effort than these is too complicated.

4. Extras, they download a movie, offer them extras like cut scenes, the making of, related TV series, things that other people liked who also liked this movie. Even third party stuff.

5. Streaming sucks, if I don't have confidence the movie will finish playing I won't watch it. (My wife watches TV via streaming I have bad real world experience of it).

6. DRM? Look, you put out a DVD it has no DRM. Anyone can rip it and distribute it. So you have nothing to lose by putting out a file that can be played on a DVD.
If you go down the DRM route you need them to change their hardware, players, system. Yuck, remember all those failed music stores with heavy DRM? So just stick the buyers reference number in the file and leave it at that.

So to sum up, I should be able to log in to your site. It suggests a series of movies, I decide what I want to buy in what format, you deliver it via a download manager or torrent or something. You offer movies coded for 700k CDRs or DVDs offering chopped up movies if necessary. The files are all marked in some way to identify me. It downloads overnight/during the day, I play them on my computer or write them to CD or transfer them to the hard drive DIVX player boxes they have now or to a TIVO.

When Jon releases his 'strip your ID out of a Sony file', you simply change the way the ID is put in so that the pirate can never be totally sure that the ID has gone.

Profit.
