Telemann gave Bach a much needed boost...
... because of all those kids. Obtained for him a job at Leipzig. Bach was considered the writer of a few good tunes, but old-fashioned. So when he died they used his scores to wrap fish. Can't waste paper.
Give Felix Mendelssohn credit for bringing Bach back a few years later (;-)). And with the St. Matthew's passion! Pure Te Dium.

And Beethoven had to take second billing to an instrumentalist at a concert. Yes, he premiered the 6th (Pastoral) and 7th Symphonies and half a dozen other transcendant hits at the same concert, but he needed to resuscitate his reputation. Can't do a crowd pleaser like Wellington's Victory March often enough for his crowd.

Brahms, okay. He had a patron who gave him money. And he wrote charming letters in return.

But all these guys had to die to become really popular. As in art, death is a great career move.
