right for the wrong reasons
Conyers is right to try to ensure protection for freedom of speech on the internet as it relates to political campaigns and issues of the day. But he is overreaching to call bloggers journalists. This isn't a freedom of the press issue, it's a freedom issue. Just because you post a web log does not confer the status of journalist. Any yack with a computer can post his or her thoughts. Look at me. Who fact checks a blog? CBS and the New York Times have layers of people trying to get it right and they still screw up. Most blogs are opinion rants anyway. And there's nothing wrong with that. But it's wading deep into a swamp to make thousands of unknowns with axes to grind journalists. Why not just protect everyone's freedom of speech? I realize that's not popular with this administration but I believe it's still part of the Constitution. Maybe I should check my facts.
