Good post
We agree on most. I realize that the media and the like do not get any "official recognition" per se. Don't you find it interesting though that the exclusions mentioned in the story were bloggers and news media. I hate to be picky but ummm who is going to set the distinctions.

That is a tip off to me that the rest will be regulated in some form or fashion. Any added regulation of anyone is a basic infringement on the right to free speech. Sigh I guess my Jeffersonian views are to outdated for this new world of electronics and computers. Just call me Don Quixote for it is tilting at windmills I will go.

"An OpenSecrets Investigation:
Advocacy Group Spending in the 2004 Elections

In advance of the 2004 elections, an untold number of advocacy groups will be spending millions of dollars in a way that will influence the vote on Election Day. They will be running ads on TV and radio stations in your area, sending glossy flyers and pamphlets to your mailbox, calling you at home, and more.

These groups represent a variety of positions on a variety of issues, but they have one thing in common: They influence how you look at the candidates. Their activities may tell you to vote for or against a specific candidate, but often they will try to shape your opinion of a political candidate or party in the context of a specific issue. Such "issue advocacy" won't explicitly tell you to elect or defeat a particular candidate, but the advocacy group's view of the candidate?s stance on their issue is clear.

What can you do to defend yourself from the onslaught of interest group spending?"

Granted this is a Republican site. BTW I am a real independant not this wishy washy I do not know independant. I slam the Demos equally. Anyway look at the last sentence. Why do I need to be protected from interest groups? This whole mess started with John McCain worry over money corrupting the politicians. Why should SIG's be regulated or protected against. Whether I agree with their (the 501c(s)) message or not does not matter. We (they) have a basic right to voice their opinion. Intersting that in two years time that we must be protected from the special interest groups. No one is worried about the politicians being corrupted any longer.

Sigh. Thanks for your time and indulgence in my rant. I am going back to my underground bunker and hunker down with some Y2K food and Yoohoo. wink
