You're delusional Carl
"Why have people become so (apparently) apathetic?"

More wild eyed theories Carl? You seem to hold the view that anyone with a hardened unwavering opinion must be an extremist. One does not have to compromise in order to get away from the left or right. It is not as though if one doesn't reside in or close to the center must be extreme. That is a blanket judgment which attempts to do away with all the "extremists".

"Could it possibly be because most people hold views that are not extremist, but are constantly bombarded by extremists on both sides of any issue?"

Please Carl. You're not being bombarded. You're just wildly fingerpointing.

"Could it be that most people really are intelligent, and can decide for themselves how much any given issue impacts their own lives?"

Please. Intelligent and American don't belong in the same sentence.

"Could it be that most people understand that issues are complex.."

What's so complex about violating the first amendment? It is an ILLEGAL law, as it infringed on the 1st amendment in a very CLEAR way.

"Could it be that people are tired of what is called 'debate' these days, what really amounts to no more than juvenile name-calling and taunting that pre-schoolers would be embarrassed to engage in on the playground?"

Does calling virtually everyone an extremist fall into that category? wink

"Could it be that people are simply fed up with being constantly told how ignorant they are, or how stupid they are, or how 'wrong' they are?"

Well, if they'd start developing some respect, manners, and intelligence the insults would stop, no? Voting an election rigging prison torturing war criminal into office is not a very good showing of intelligence, eh? wink

"Could it be that people have learned not to trust anyone claiming to be speaking 'for the people', whether that claimant is a politician, religious leader, or 'journalist'?"

I stick with anyone that stays with the facts, something no politician has remotely done with respect to 9/11.

Anyways, the REAL reason for the apathy is that politicians have always strived to make people that way. Americans are constantly bombarded by numbing narcotizing scandals and entertainment in order to keep them distracted and/or disinterested. Politicians also always make sure that they're meetings are boring and their legislation overly lengthy in order to discourage interest. The less people watching means the more that politicians can steal and pass dubious pro-business legislation, with the recent bankruptcy bill being yet another prime example of what happens to Americans when they don't keep watch over things.
