a web browser is not science
And it's common in the scientific community. You put your research out there and fellow scientists point out everything you overlooked. Only with OSS it's the code out there for peer review and anyone can look at it.

A web browser is not science nor does it attract a "scientific" community. All of the protocols that Mozilla uses are already standard protocols and a web browser is too simple a system to attract researchers. Yes, they can look at the code if they want, but no self-respecting scientist would want to look at browser code and expect to get some scientific knowledge out of it. Maybe if we were developing operating systems (like Linux), which are much more complex and interesting, would we be interested in such a thing.

How on earth does MSFT have the nads to say in public they think their product is more secure than peer reviewed code available to professionals across the globe?

Maybe because MSFT is rich and they have money to pay for those professionals to work for them full time in the first place?

OSS in general is more secure

Yes it is, but *in general*. That's because the majority of the worlds' software programs are closed source and have average security, while in general most open source programs originate from universities as part of research projects and are written by more experienced people.

The obscurity tactic doesn't work, I think we've pretty well established that
Yes it does work, but for a short while. Did you know that Mozilla Firefox uses obscurity too? If you file a security bug on Mozilla, it will be marked secret and nobody except the Mozilla team can view it or open it. e.g., https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=223041
