No need for a big fix
I don't think Apple has as serious a need for overhaul as you do. Their attitude has always been one of "DRM-lite", they know it won't be unbreakable, and when it is broken, they tweak it. All they need is to make an inconvenience for people trying to get rid of the DRM, and they'll keep the terms of their contract and the RIAA will be happy.

I certainly know I wouldn't be happy with any purchased music that came with advertising. I don't want to hear some ad hundreds of times over the years.

I still think the best path is to leverage p2p networks into making a profit. The best systems are ones like Weed. Files are DRM protected, you can listen to it 3 times before you have to pay. If you do pay, part of the money goes to the person you downloaded it from. This way you get the massive power of a p2p network, and you give people an incentive not to trade in un-DRM'ed files (a financial incentive).
