How much lock-in value does IE have?

Not much anymore; IE's original reason for existing is almost extinct (how many IE-specific websites have you run across lately?). MS did largely succeed in making sure Netscape-style plugins didn't emerge as a viable cross-platform technology, but they failed in their efforts to supplant Java with either Active-X or the MSVM. MS extensions to HTML don't really buy web developers anything, so there's no need to use them. MS has almost completely failed in their attempts to make running Windows a prerequisite for effective Internet access, which was the primary reason for IE's existance. They still try (witness Sender ID), but they now have very little real leverage.

It still makes sense for Windows to ship with a browser, but 90%+ share of the browser market isn't worth what it used to be.
