Without that they can not maintain lock-in, and also get users and developers to use the next wave of lock-in technology. If we had 25% market share for non MS browsers, that would kill any Microsoft plans to slowly insert more proprietary technologies into IE. The sme thing might happen to them that happened to IBM with the PC. Remember when the Compac PCs were more compatible than the IBM PCs? People could start downloading Firefox because it is more likely to render newer sites correctly. Imagine if Google could make some knock-out web sites that required full standards support. It is getting really easy to download Firefox.
