Would you prefer they cede to standards like ISO and ECMA?
W3 HTML 4.01 is the basis for ISO HTML (ISO/IEC 15445:2000(E) http://www.cs.tcd.ie/15445/15445.HTML) which dates back to 2000. ECMA 262 http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-262.htm (ECMAScript)and 290 are the standards for Javascript, as submitted and altered by an established body.

On W3:
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding.

Thus, interoperability is the point! We now have (in web development) multimodal issues that are specified via OMA (Open Mobile Alliance http://www.openmobilealliance.org/) regarding devices (PDA, Cellphone, etc.) that are based upon work from W3 and ISO.

Granted, you could be one of those "too old to learn" types that has not moved from a PC to a device (kiosk, cellphone/smartphone, digital TV, etc) that can view content, but standards allow for content to do that.
