"And if IE7 passes the Acid2 test, be sure to recognize Microsoft's compliance."
We will. But before we break out the balloons and champagne, let's wait until Microsoft let's everyone down yet one more time. Of course Microsoft could pull a rabbit out of its hat and make a truly standards-compliant browser. However, I am basing my skepticism on, say, more than 20 years of past behavior to account for my position. C'mon Carl--would you be willing to bet 10,000 dollars on Microsoft impementing a completely standards-compliant browser? I know you're not that foolish..;-)
"While MS should have been more compliant over the years, continuing to harp on past noncompliance won't solve anything."
Of course it will. I quote from the article as at least some bit of proof: " Even Microsoft made sure IE 6 passed the acid test."
..and as a result of getting Microsoft on board: "As a result of the acid test, CSS became usable and has changed the way Web sites are authored."
Ya see, complaining has possibly led to the successful implementation of at least CSS1. Sometimes complaining CAN produce positive results.
"Positive reinforcement is the way to go.."
Which apparently doesn't do much when there is a monopoly to contend with..
"if Microsoft sees (and hears) how appreciative people are when it DOES comply with standards, future compliance will be that much more likely."
Which would be a direct 180 degree turn from how they've conducted business over the years. Wanna place another bet with me Carl that you're prediction will remain in a fantasy bubble?
"If MS makes the effort to improve its compliance only to be berated for not doing it sooner, it probably won't go to the trouble in the future."
Microsoft will only ever do anything that either makes immediate profits or helps to solidify Microsoft hegemony in the IT industry, nothing more or less. They are a business, and exist to make profits, not listen to or kowtow to the public's interests. Isn't that always what the Microshills keep telling us?
"Why expend the effort if no one will appreciate it?"
Well, no one appreciates product activation, DRM, proprietary formats, or phoning home, but Microsoft sure seems to be diligently expending that effort!
