If the site wants to track me, they could do so by having an authentication scheme and tracking via that and keeping the data on their server(s).

After the initial registration, the browser (or other software) can retain the user name and password so that future usage is seamless.

It would also have the additional advantage of having better, more accurate historical data since it would be exposed to the vagaries of John Q's PC(s).
