There's no "Neato" factor
Back when the web was first being introduced, it was very easy to see what all the fuss was about. Even people who were basically non-technical but used computers (or were forced to) at work could see some benefit of all these computers connected together, sharing data with each other. You could describe this to people, even as a vague concept - "Instant info about anything" - and you'd get a response of "Yeah, that would be neat". The growth of the original web was not that hard to predict based on this "neato" factor.

But this new "Semantic Web" - I've been reading about it, at the vague concept level, and I can't bring myself to say anything remotely like "That would be neat". Like some other posts have said, it seems that this is all based on very old ideas, and I really can't see where they're heading with the concept. It's kinda reminding me of Steve Ballmer trying to hype ".Net" a couple years ago, when they were tacking ".Net" onto every darned MS product. Yes, ".Net" is still out there, probably doing people good, but has it really proved to be the Next Great Concept In Computing? Not really. No "Neato" factor. Same thing with this Next Great Evolution Of The Web, as far as I can tell.

I guess we'll see eventually. But I won't hold my breath.
