I would imagine that the Yahoo store uses the encrypted WMA format, which you can't play natively on iPods. So, it works like this:
iPods - Are pretty much limited to your CD collection and the iTunes music store.
WMA-enabled devices - Work with your CD collection, and pretty much every online music store except iTunes.
