A Short, Brief History ...
Netscape dies ... and the body was acquired by AOL to use as a bargaining chip against Microsoft (the AOL service is completely dependent upon IE).

The open source group Mozilla.org is formed, and has several old Netscape employees. The browser is re-written from scratch over the course of several years. Netscape periodically gets copies of the Mozilla browser, adds bunches of AOL stuff, changes the logo and calls it Netscape. Netscape 6 was actually Mozilla 0.8.

Time-Warner/AOL keeps the Netscape brand name, but cuts Mozilla loose.

Because the UI for Mozilla is heavy, a group of programmers create Phoenix as an off-shoot, which starts to get praise as having a very simple but comprehensive UI. Phoenix is renamed Firebird. Firebird is renamed Firefox.

So both Firefox and Netscape are based on the Mozilla project. All three are running the Gecko engine. Netscape is exactly like Mozilla, except for the branding.

So, I'm not sure what all of the comparisons are about. Pick either Mozilla or Firefox, depending on whether you want the browser or and entire suite. Pick AOL if you want Mozilla, but like to go back after the install and delete all of the extra AOL stuff.
