high/low Quality are differnt markets
Higher Quality CD/DVD music vs lower quality downloaded music is not an issue. Those are two entirely differnt markets.

The download like the cassette while lower quality offered easier portablity. So that's the market those products are for. While the CD and even DVD audio is for the home stereo in a controlled enviroment to produce the high quality sound that consumer wants.

Also the download is for the person who wants it now and doesn't want to wait to buy the CD. In many cases finding an older CD of music very time consuming and often requires on to buy online where you can wait a week or two for the purchase. Or think of kid that want that tune but won't be at the mall till the weekend as they are stuck in suburbs. That's the market for lower quality downloads.

For the higher quality you looking for those with equipment, more and more people are getting that equipment every day. Also the FAN will buy multiple copies of the same song. The CDs, DVDs, Live concert downloads, and demo downloads will be highly sought after. If one is not a FAN one doesn't often buy CD as radio fills the need for any music so they aren't a market at all. This something I think the RIAA and MPAA don't understand.
