I know the motivation here
Visa and other credit card companies have done what the automotive companies have done for years - make their product with cheaper and cheaper grades of plastic. Some of my newer cards split within weeks of receiving them. The magnetic strip wears out after a year or less. Without the physical wearing out process of swiping, these cards could last a LONG time . . .
