Bad arg
"I can buy a book, make any annotations in the margins, and resell the book. It's MY book, and I can do what I want with it."

Private ownership does not apply. You did not buy the content from the web site. You are merely being allowed to view it and nothing more, unless otherwise stated. You cannot make changes to copyrighted material, without permission, and then publish it(free or not makes no difference on that). That is exactly what Google is doing.

"Imagine if I went to your web site, saw something of interest for sale, adn was considering buying it? ... I would be going to google, amazon, etc., and doing a price search. ... Google has simplfied my task by giving me links to click, rather than having to copy a selection and do the search. My preference would be that the links open in new windows, though. Hopefully it's an option."

What gets me here, mostly, is the "hopefully this is an option" part. Your openly admitting that you will subject yourself to whatever options Google, in all their charity, is willing to give you. In other words, it's okay if they partially control what I see and where I go as long as I have options. That makes you a sheep regardless of the "conditions" you want to apply to it. No matter what fanboys want to think, this isn't even and end user issue. It is an issue between content providers and Goolge. The end user will just suffer the consequences.
