style not substance
HTML provides that the browser will choose the rendering based on the HTML tags. Fonts can change, colors may be a little different, etc. However, a link is not just style - it's also substance.

Many sites support themselves by providing links to affiliates for cash. If google can change the links, they are robbing a copyright owner of his well earned payment. Google will catch some lawsuits over this one. IF it was wrong for MS, it's wrong for Google.

Most readers of the web barely know the difference between a form and frame, a URL or a search phrase. Few will realize that Google is changing the substance of the page.
