What about..
When I develop a web page, I expect it to be displayed as I created it - no extra tags, no pop-up adds based on my content, no style changes. "Smart Tags" infringes on the right of the developer to produce content. What will be next? If I place a link to Average Joes book store, will google change it to Amazon?

What about ad-blockers (s/a the adblock extension in FF)?

IMHO, as long as the user truly does want to see (or not see) the Google content (unlike with Gator..), then it's OK.

If I only use Amazon to buy books, then having all links to other bookstores changed to Amazon is a convenience for me, nothing more (otherwise I'd need to open up a new tab/window and search for the book myself on Amazon)..
