No standards needed at all
The fact is that you can do pretty much anything you want today with a combination of HTML and JavaScript. The code may look ugly to some, but it works. Yes, there are some inconsistencies between browsers but there are now plenty of tools to help work around that problem.

In short, neither XForms nor Web Forms 2.0 should be a "standard" at all. Use whatever development tool you want. IMHO, Web Forms 2.0 is just a tool, and should not be a standard.

I can understand a defense department needing something like XForms if they don't want any browser scripting for security reasons. However, this logic would require that XForms be *exclusively* declarative, with no way for the page designer to adjust how the form is displayed at runtime. However, if XForms are not exclusively declarative, then it will open up a security hole equivalent to using JavaScript in the browser. And if your going to this much trouble then why not just make an XML based form standard exclusively for the military. That was the point of the X in XML in the first place. Also, a military standard is much more likely to get the support of Microsoft than a W3C standard.

I think a lot of the activity around XML based forms is because people don't like JavaScript. Yet the alternatives people are inventing have many of the same properties that people list as to why they don't like JavaScript. IMHO, it's time people bite the bullet and really learn JavaScript.

If we need a standard at all, it would be a JavaScript coding standard so that the code is more readable by all.
