Consumer are actually quite smart
The RIAA and Hollywood can and will tinker with DRM, trying to
push it as far as possible. However, if current music download
business is any indication, consumers can clearly see and
decide. Music rental has been around for three years (remember
Harmony, PressPlay... now Napster). Very tight DRM = no
consumer success. In the other corner, Apple's iTunes Music
Store (iTMS). Very liberal DRM = quarter billiion (with a 'B') songs
sold / dollars of revenue.

If Apple ever tries to tighten DRM, consumers wold abandon it. If
Napster et al. ever decide to loosen theirs, they might stand a
chance aginst Apple. As it is, not bloody likely.

We buy music in order to keep listening to it for the remainder
of our lives (30+, 40+, 50+ years, depending on our age...). Will
Napster be around that long??? Again, definitely not bloody
likely. The moment Napster folds, there goes my precious music
collection from my youth, my best years...

DRM will ultimately be controlled by the consumer.
