The original poster claimed that people weren't willing to buy songs they download, and we both know that isn't true, given the success of the iTMS.

This is really the key. If DRM doesn't get in my way, I don't notice it and don't care about it. There's nothing I do with my normally purchased music on a cd that I can't do with Apple's DRM protected music from the iTMS. The problem is that increasingly, companies are pushing for more and more DRM, and actually punishing their paying customers by limiting their use moreso than options that can be found elsewhere. That's what leads to more illegal downloading.
