--- I take issue with Apple making sure that iTunes is EXCLUSIVELY the only way to load music into the iPod.---

I haven't tried it, but I am told there are other software alternatives to iTunes for loading up your iPod (or just treat it like a Firewire hard drive, really).

Regardless, you can import any mp3 file you want into iTunes, including ones purchased at mp3.com. You do realize this, right?
