Driving customers to illegal services
You are right NonZealot, in that much of what DRM does is drive customers to break the law. When you are an honest, law abiding citizen, and you pay for what you purchase, you are in essence being penalized. The criminals get the music file for free, and they get it with no restrictions on use whatsoever, and they get it without spyware and subsequent spamming.

RIAA/MPAA, if you want me to buy your product, and I'm happy to do so, by the way, you must give me a compelling reason for that purchase. If you're offering me only a crippled product that I can't use how I choose to use it, I won't buy it. Because I'm law abiding, I'll just do without your music, and buy from non-RIAA labels. But others aren't as strong-willed as I am, and if they choose instead to obtain your music via illegal means, you'll have to take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself why they're doing this.
