at the server. You don't have to trust that sight directly if you choose to trust the CA.

But, the browser checks the certificate, and these look alike characters can be used in certificates as well. So the affected browsers trust the imposter.

Nothing is 100% safe. Especially when software, to the exclusion of the user, is responsible for security.
