The history.
When AOL withdrew its support, Mozilla and FireFox appeared to be at loose ends.

But then Nokia came up with about $200,000. Mozilla produced FireFox.

They also developed minimo. Nokia and others can use minimo instead of their own company browser or one purchased from Opera. Thus, they can lay off some of their staff who had been working on the company-specific browser, and reduce payments to Opera, which pays salaries.

Free labor reducing paid labor.

This makes me doubt the altruism of all concerned.
