Bad decision
Meridien, French for "Meridian"
Noun, An imaginary great circle on the earth's surface passing through the North and South geographic poles. All points on the same meridian have the same longitude.

Meridien hotels don't own the word, they own its use only in connection with hotels. There are other companies in France with than name, and they are allowed to advertise with than name.

Louis Vuitton are in a slightly better position because its a more obscure word. But again there is nothing stopping a company setting up a fruit company call Louis Vuitton and advertising it.

I know it sucks, their competitors advertise next to "their" search result, but its not "their" search result, and its no different from advertisers taking adverts next to a magazine feature of "theirs", or advertising flyover of "their" theme park in "their" airspace.
